September is absolutely jam-packed at the IFI, as festival season approaches and we welcome guests aplenty, along with new releases every week.
Of course, it’s also the month of Open Day, which moves to September to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the IFI opening in Temple Bar. That’s going to include a full day of free events, which will be revealed on Thursday August 31st.
Other highlights include the IFI Documentary Festival (from September 27th) with Irish and worldwide premieres. We’ll also have Q&As for The Work and The Drummer and the Keeper, free films for Culture Night (September 22nd) and a very special event with acclaimed author John Connolly for his new book he (September 19th).

5th TUES – 18.30 | IRISH FOCUS: WRITING HOME A production of the Filmbase Masters in Digital Feature Filmmaking Course 2017. This drama about a successful author returning to his small Irish town will be introduced by directors Nagham Abboud, Alekson L. Dall’Armellina and Miriam Velasco.
5th TUES – 20.00 | OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: DETROIT Kathryn Bigelow’s searing drama set during the 1967 race riots in Detroit stars John Boyega and Will Poulter. Presented with Open Captioned subtitles for the hearing impaired.
5th TUES – 20.30 | THE WORK + Q&A A new documentary set in Folsom State Prison dealing with the a special four-day group therapy session which is held twice a year. With incredible access, the filmmakers dive head first into these powerful sessions, following the path of three civilians who are also attending The Work. This screening will be attended by the filmmakers.
5th TUES – 21.30 | IFI CAFÉ BAR PUB QUIZ (FREE EVENT) Our free monthly pub quiz makes a return, come along with your team of up to four people from 21.30 for plenty of questions and fun, with a prize at the end of the league!
6th WED – 18.30 | OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: GOD’S OWN COUNTRY An intense drama set in the Yorkshire wilds, where a young sheep farmer and his new immigrant helper start to form a deep connection. Presented with Open Captions for the hearing impaired.

8th FRI – 18.30 | THE DRUMMER AND THE KEEPER + Q&A Writer/director/composer Nick Kelly captures the mental health pitfalls of a rock’n’roll lifestyle with sharp insight, while his portrait of a young man with Asperger’s, drawn with affection and deep understanding, is perfectly observed. Includes Q&A with director Nick Kelly.
9TH SAT – 20.00 | IF I THINK OF GERMANY AT NIGHT + PANEL DISCUSSION Romuald Karmakar’s new documentary is an appreciation of the work of five German pioneers of electronic music. This screening is in association with science gallery at trinity college Dublin’s SOUND CHECK exhibition, and will be followed by a panel discussion.
13th WED – 18.20 | IFI FILM CLUB: THE WORK A new documentary set in Folsom State Prison dealing with the a special four-day group therapy session which is held twice a year. 13th WED – 18.30| IFI FRENCH FILM CLUB: BELLE DE JOUR Director Luis Buñuel brings a number of surreal touches to this classic re-release, which is less about sex than the effects of repression and the interplay between the face an individual presents to the world and their most personal and unrestrained thoughts. Starring Catherine Deneuve and Jean Sorel.
16th SAT – IFI OPEN DAY It’s back! One of the highlights of the year, the IFI presents a full day of free screenings and special events, including a chance to visit the projection booth and a whole lot more. We’ll have full details of the Open Day screenings on Thursday August 31st.
18TH MON – 18.30 | DISPOSSESSION + PANEL DISCUSSION Paul Sng’s feature documentary explores the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain. At the end of the 1970s, 42% of the UK’s population lived in council housing; today that figure is closer to 8%. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.
19th TUESDAY – 13.20 OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: MOTHER! Darren Aronofsky teams with Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem for a new feature that defies description. A couple living at an isolated house begin to receive guests (including Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris) and things just get stranger. Presented with Open Captions for the hearing impaired.
19th TUESDAY – 18.20 | JOHN CONNOLLY: HE + Q&A Join bestselling author John Connolly for a very special event to celebrate the publication of his new novel, he – a new novel which dives into the life behind the laughs of one Stan Laurel. This special event will include screenings of two Laurel and Hardy films, plus a Q&A with John Connolly, hosted by Andrew Mangan. Connolly will also sign copies the book on the night.
20th WED – 18.30 | THE BIGGER PICTURE: TITICUT FOLLIES September’s Bigger Picture offering is a rare opportunity to experience one of the most acclaimed and controversial documentaries of all time. Frederick Wiseman’s Titicut Follies is a shocking glimpse inside the State Hospital for the Criminally Insane at Bridgewater, Massachusetts. This screening will be introduced by film editor, and director of The Farthest, Emer Reynolds.
22nd FRI – 18.10, 19.00, 19.50 | CULTURE NIGHT: SHORT & SWEET IFI celebrates Culture Night September 22nd 2017 with three free programmes of family-friendly Irish shorts. This is a FREE event – simply collect your ticket on the night before the showings.
23RD SAT – 12.30 IFI & AEMI PROJECTIONS: TRIBUTE TO PETER HUTTON A major figure of American experimental cinema who died in June of last year, Peter Hutton was greatly influenced by his time working in the merchant marine. This tribute to the filmmaker includes three short pieces, presented as part of the port | river | city a project between aemi and Cliona Harmey.
23rd SAT – 15.00 | IFI & AEMI PROJECTIONS: KEEPERS OF THE PORT In this lyrical portrait of working life filmed on Dublin’s docks, a pride emerges within the stories and memories of the custodians of the port. As the film moves through discrete yet interconnected hubs of activity, filmmaker Moira Sweeney narrates her reflections on the evolving picture of a vibrant, transforming port life. Presented as part of the port | river | city a project between aemi and Cliona Harmey.
24TH SUN – 11.00 | IFI FAMILY: ZIP AND ZAP AND THE MARBLE GANG It’s all about back to school these days, but in this fun adventure from Spain, naughty twins Zip and Zap are sent to a correctional school during their summer holidays. Tickets: €4.80 per person, €14.40 family ticket (2 adults + 2 children, 1 adult + 3 children).
24th SUN – 14.00 | MYSTERY MATINEE The Mystery Matinee makes a return, with a surprise film that could come from any time in the entire history of cinema. We’ve had brand new premieres, sci-fi favourites and more so far – come along and find out what the September pick is for just €5!

25th MON – 18.40 | FEAST YOUR EYES: BORG/MCENROE September’s pairing of a new release and a specially devised main course menu will be Janus Metz’s Borg/McEnroe. It’s the story of the epic rivalry between Swedish tennis legend Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) and his greatest adversary, American John McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf), which came to a head during the 1980 Wimbledon Championships.
27TH WED – 11.00 | WILD STRAWBERRIES: 20TH CENTURY WOMAN Director Mike Mills’ previous film, Beginners, was based on the experience of his father coming out in his 70s. This latest film depicts his growing up in a female-dominated environment in Santa Barbara in 1979. Playing as part of our over 55s film club, with tickets just €4.25 including tea/coffee.
