DISPOSSESSION: THE GREAT SOCIAL HOUSING SWINDLE + PANEL

Director: Paul Sng

82 mins, 2017, UK, Digital

This film screened on Monday 18th September 2017.

This screening will include a panel discussion featuring:
Eoin O’Mahony, Teaching Fellow at the UCD School of Geography
Michelle Norris, Head of the UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice
Rita Fagan, Project Director at St. Michael’s Estate Family Resource Centre

Paul Sng’s feature documentary explores the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain. At the end of the 1970s, 42% of the UK’s population lived in council housing; today that figure is closer to 8%.

Narrated by Maxine Peake, the film focuses on the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates across the UK, and offers a welcome counterpoint to the often-negative media portrayal of life in these communities.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.
