BRENDA FRICKER RIP

The Irish Film Institute is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Brenda Fricker. She leaves an incredible legacy of work, and made history in 1990 when she became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award, taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Christy Brown’s mother in My Left Foot alongside Daniel Day-Lewis.

Ross Keane, Director of the IFI said: “Brenda leaves us with an extraordinary body of work. From her Oscar-winning performance in My Left Foot to her wonderful performances in Jim Sheridan’s The Field and Home Alone 2, she lit up the big screen time and time again. Brenda was most recently in with us at IFI last year for her incredible work in Tadhg O’Sullivan’s The Swallow. Apart from being an actress we will never forget, she was also a wonderful character, whose company we all thoroughly enjoyed. And she was never short of an animated conversation about her beloved dogs! We will miss her dearly”. RIP.
