Director Mike Mills’ previous film, Beginners, was based on the experience of his father coming out in his 70s. This latest film depicts his growing up in a female-dominated environment in Santa Barbara in 1979.

Led by Dorothea, thrillingly played by Annette Bening, this divorced mother believes that surrounding her son with strong women will be the making of him. Using photographs and memories, the director reveals how Dorothea emerged as a strong and vibrant 20th century woman.
