JULY AT THE IFI – SEASONS, SPECIALS EVENTS AND EVERYTHING ELSE

July has arrived, and the IFI is celebrating the month in unique fashion with two 70mm presentations.

We’re also showing a spectacular 70mm print of the space-race epic The Right Stuff as part of our Dark Skies Festival on July 15th.

That’s not all, the month includes a bevy of new releases, a live theatre blockbuster in Angels in America, the powerful Children of Men (already 11 years old!) as well as two films celebrating the life and times of musicians Gregory Porter and John Coltrane.

Read on for details of our events, new releases and a whole lot more!

We Are Moving is an intimate portrait of Joan Denise Moriarty, a pioneer of early 20th century Irish dance. With a dream of bringing ballet to every corner of Ireland, Moriarty created a uniquely Irish form of the dance style inspired by her love of nature and Irish folklore. Followed by a Q&A with director Claire Dix.

11TH TUES – 18.30 |IFI FRENCH FILM CLUB: THE MIDWIFE
A midwife gets unexpected news from her father’s old mistress in this film starring Catherine Frot and cinema legend Catherine Deneuve. They’re pitted against one another by director Martin Provost (Violette) in a story that makes the most of their differences on its way to an emotional climax.

12th WED – 18.20 | FILM CLUB: SANCTUARY
Our monthly film club lets you have your say, in an informal conversation facilitated by IFI staff. This month, we’re taking a look at Len Collin’s new film Sanctuary, which deals with a touching relationship between Larry, a young man with Down’s syndrome, and Sophie, who suffers from epilepsy.

13TH THURS – 18.15 |DARK SKIES: THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN
Based on Michael Crichton’s 1969 novel of the same name, Robert Wise’s brilliantly conceived sci-fi suspense film foregrounds procedural fact gathering over conventional shock tactics as the true nature of the alien virus is teasingly revealed.

14TH FRI – 18.40 | DARK SKIES: PRIMER
Shane Carruth’s ultra-low budget sci-fi film digs deep into the potential delights, and eventual consequences, of time travel. It’s a staggering achievement and one which makes a virtue of its lack of resources to tell a truly bewildering tale.

14TH FRI – 20.30 | PILGRIMAGE + Q&A
A Cistercian monk is charged with transporting a sacred object across the wildlands of early 13th century Ireland in this gritty period piece. He has some help from the likes of Tom Holland’s novice and a mute killer played by Jon Bernthal, and plenty of enemies of every side. This screening will include a Q&A with director Brendan Muldowney and writer Jamie Hannigan.

15th SAT – 16.40 |DARK SKIES: PHASE IV + ALTERNATE ENDING
Ant colonies in the Arizona desert are behaving unusually. Two scientists set up camp nearby, linking their behaviour to the titular lunar cycle.  Evolving at an alarming rate, the ants’ sophisticated behaviour suggests that it is they who are scrutinising the scientists. Includes the original ending excised from the film for being too trippy for audiences in 1974.

15TH SAT – 19.30 |DARK SKIES: THE RIGHT STUFF (70MM)
The tentative first steps of US space exploration are thrillingly realised in Philip Kaufman’s triumphal ode to the test pilots who paved the way for the astronauts of the Mercury Space Programme. And showing in 70mm!

16TH SUN – 13.40 |DARK SKIES: VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED
Based on John Wyndham’s novel ‘The Midwich Cuckoos’, Wolf Rilla’s classic tale of an alien invasion by stealth was a huge hit in its day, spawning a sequel and a 1995 remake by none other than John Carpenter.

16TH SUN – 18.00 |DARK SKIES: THE QUIET EARTH
A speculative sci-fi mystery with a commitment to psychological depth in its characterisation that is rare for the genre, Geoff Murphy’s film builds to a strikingly ambiguous climax that should engender much discussion and debate.

16TH SUN – 20.00 |DARK SKIES: THE FARTHEST + Q&A
Employing interviews with the NASA team who worked on the project, brilliantly assembled archive footage and illustrative animations, Emer Reynolds recreates Voyager’s forty-five year journey, one that continues still. The Farthest is a captivating, deeply moving tribute to one of the most audacious projects in human history, one of mankind’s greatest successes.

18th TUES – 18.30 |OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: THE BEGUILED
Sofia Coppola’s take on Thomas P. Cullinan’s 1966 novel ditches the plot’s more lurid elements in favour of a slow-burn, nuanced and decidedly feminist approach to the material. Shifting the perspective from the central soldier figure to that of the women who care for him allows for plenty of simmering conflict in this humid, wryly amusing piece of southern gothic melodrama. Screening with Open Captioned subtitles.

20TH THURS – 19.00 | NT LIVE: ANGELS IN AMERICA PART I: MILLENNIUM APPROACHES
America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell. Starring Andrew Garfield (Silence, Hacksaw Ridge), Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Nathan Lane (The Producers), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Russell Tovey (The Pass).

Tying in with this month’s Dark Skies season, this sweet and nostalgic fantasy is set in 1960s Dublin, and was filmed around Walkinstown and Crumlin, childhood home of the filmmaker, Martin Duffy. It’s the story of eight-year-old Harry, who finds comfort in the Flash Gordon TV series, as he tries to deal with the death of his father.
