October 25th 2022: This November, the Irish Film Institute (IFI) presents a selection of exciting new Irish and international releases, including The Wonder, Aftersun, My Father’s Dragon and Aisha. From Wednesday 16th to Sunday 27th, the IFI French Film Festival returns, bringing the best of current French cinema to audiences along with a slate of beloved classics.
In new releases, Irish-set feature The Wonder, starring Florence Pugh and Niamh Algar, comes to IFI Cinemas from Wednesday 2nd. From Friday 4th, new documentary The Peculiar Sensation of Being Pat Ingoldsby and Living, Oliver Hermanus’s remake of Kurosawa classic Ikiru, screen at the IFI. My Father’s Dragon, the exciting new release from the award-winning Cartoon Saloon, will have a select number of screenings at the IFI from Friday 4th.
Opening at the IFI on Friday 11th are Clouded Reveries, an intimate exploration of the world and creative process of poet Doireann Ní Ghríofa (the opening night screening will be followed by a Q&A with Doireann Ní Ghríofa and director Ciara Nic Chormaic, hosted by Theo Dorgan); No Bears, the latest feature from banned and recently imprisoned Iranian director Jafar Panahi; and a new 4K re-release of Peter Greenaway’s The Draughtsman’s Contract.
Screening in IFI Cinemas from Friday 18th are Charlotte Wells’s debut feature Aftersun, starring Paul Mescal, and Frank Berry’s extensively researched Aisha, which provides a powerful critique of the Direct Provision system in Ireland. Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All, starring Timothée Chalamet, Taylor Russell and Mark Rylance; pigeon-racing documentary Million Dollar Pigeons and Maria Schrader’s gripping adapatation She Said screen in IFI Cinemas from Friday 25th.
From Wednesday 16th to Sunday 27th, the IFI French Film Festival, the IFI’s flagship festival, returns, bringing the best of current French cinema to audiences along with a slate of beloved classics. Highlights in the programme include Brother and Sister by festival favourite Arnaud Desplechin; Winter Boy by Christopher Honoré, and The Super 8 Years by Annie Ernaux, a recent recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. This year will also see a tribute to Jean-Luc Godard, with four of his most celebrated ’60s films in the line-up, and to Jean-Louis Trintignant, with a screening of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s masterpiece, Three Colours: Red. This month’s Irish Focus strand presents Violet Gibson – The Irish Woman who shot Mussolini, a film chronicling her life, from her rejection of privileged Anglo-Irish roots to her emergence as a bold freethinker, committed to social justice and deeply opposed to fascism, screening in-cinema on Thursday 3rd, followed by a Q&A with co-director Barrie Dowdall and co-producer Siobhan Lynam.
November’s Archive at Lunchtime programme, Kerbside Collection, offers a selection of road safety gems from an impressive line-up of Irish directorial talent, screening for free every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday in November.
Screening on Sunday 13th, this month’s Mystery Matinee offers audiences the chance to see a surprise film, new or old, for only €6. In event screenings, new documentary The Ghost of Richard Harris explores the work and character of the Limerick-born actor, writer and musician, and screens at the IFI on Tuesday 15th.
From the Vaults will feature Guiltrip in November, a film exploring the claustrophobic terror of a violent relationship, screening in-cinema on Wednesday 23rd followed by a discussion with writer-director Gerard Stembridge and Ruth O’Dea of Women’s Aid.
This month, Wild Strawberries, the monthly film club for over 55s, offers screenings of Colm Bairéad’s An Cailín Ciúin on Friday 25th and Wednesday 30th. This month, IFI Family presents a screening of King, an affecting and thrilling story about a trafficked lion cub who escapes the airport and ends up in the home of 12-year-old Inés and her brother Alex, on Sunday 27th as part of this year’s IFI French Film Festival.
On Wednesday 30th, the IFI and Crash Ensemble are proud to present [REACTIONS], a programme of 17 short films featuring commissioned music from Irish and international composers, to mark the leading new music ensemble’s 25th birthday.
