WILD STRAWBERRIES: AN CAILÍN CIÚIN

Director: Colm Bairéad

94 mins, Ireland, 2022, Digital, Subtitled

Few could have anticipated the success and impact of this beautifully realised film. Adapted from Claire Keegan’s novella Foster, it is the story of a young girl, Cáit, who is sent to spend summer on her aunt and uncle’s farm.

Catherine Clinch is magnificent in the title role, awkwardly and quietly adjusting to her new surroundings and the unaccustomed attention. Carrie Crowley and Andrew Bennett excel as the foster parents, yearning in different ways as they lean into the new situation.

Record-breaking, evocative and tender, An Cailín Ciúin offers something different with each viewing.
