THE WONDER

Director: SEBASTIÁN LELIO

103 mins, Ireland-UK-USA, 2022, Digital

The year is 1862: nurse Lib Wright (Florence Pugh) has travelled from England to rural Ireland to assess the condition of Anna (Kíla Lord Cassidy), a nine-year-old girl who, it is alleged, has inexplicably survived for months without eating – subsisting, she claims, on ‘manna from heaven’ alone. The elders of this isolated, deeply religious community, including priest Ciarán Hinds and haughty physician Dr. McBreaty (Toby Jones), have hired Lib to determine whether what they are witnessing is a miracle, and she and a nun are instructed to observe Anna in isolation on alternate nights, against the wishes of the girl’s mother (Niamh Algar). Meanwhile, London reporter Will (Tom Burke) is sniffing around the story. Sebastián Lelio’s (A Fantastic Woman, Gloria) thoughtful adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel poses fascinating questions about faith, science, and the power of stories.

There will be Open Captioned screenings at 15.40 on Monday 7th and 18.30 on Wednesday 9th.
