14 May 2026: The Irish Film Institute (IFI), Dublin is proud to present Steven Spielberg’s latest spectacular, Disclosure Day, in luminous 70mm, from Wednesday, June 10th. As the only venue in Ireland with 70mm film projection capabilities, the IFI is honoured to screen the sci-fi epic of the summer in this format for an unmatched viewing experience.

Released by Universal Pictures, Disclosure Day is a new original event film created and directed by Steven Spielberg. The film stars SAG winner and Oscar nominee Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor (Challengers, The Crown), Oscar winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman franchise), Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters, The Perfect Couple) and two-time Oscar nominee Colman Domingo (Sing Sing, Rustin).

Based on a story by Spielberg, the screenplay is by David Koepp, whose previous work with Spielberg includes the scripts for Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Combined, those films earned more than $3 billion worldwide. Koepp also wrote the script for 2025’s Jurassic World Rebirth.

To celebrate the film’s release, the IFI will also present a mini-season of Spielberg Sci-Fi. This will include Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Sat, June 6th, 15.15); E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (Sun, June 7th, 15.10); A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Wed, June 17th, 20.10); and Minority Report (Sat, June 27th, 14.00), the last of which being the IFI’s June Bigger Picture screening, introduced by author and screenwriter Derek Landy (Skulduggery Pleasant series, Boy Eats Girl). Customers who purchase tickets between May 14th and 27th for any Spielberg Sci-Fi screening will be automatically entered into a draw for tickets for a special advance preview screening of Disclosure Day.

Disclosure Day is produced by five-time Academy Award nominee Kristie Macosko Krieger (The Fabelmans, West Side Story) and by Spielberg for Amblin Entertainment. The executive producers are Adam Somner and Chris Brigham.

Steven Spielberg is one of the industry’s most successful and influential filmmakers. The top-grossing director of all time, Spielberg has helmed such blockbusters as Jaws, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, the Indiana Jones franchise and Jurassic Park.

Among his myriad honors, he is a three-time Academy Award winner, including Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for Schindler’s List, which received a total of seven Oscars, and for Best Director for Saving Private Ryan. His most recent film, The Fabelmans, was released by Universal in 2022 and received seven Academy Award nominations, including for Directing, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Picture.

Previous 70mm screenings at the IFI have included Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo; Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master and One Battle After Another; Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer; Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist; David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia and Ryan’s Daughter; and Mona Fastvold’s The Testament of Ann Lee.

ABOUT 70MM

A 70mm film is a cinema print in which each frame is 70mm wide, containing 65mm wide visual image, with the remaining 5mm containing the soundtrack strips.

Despite the remarkable audiovisual experience offered by 70mm films, which can still surpass the best of what digital cinema has to offer, they are limited in number. Even within the prints available internationally there are a finite number which remain in a condition that best shows off the format.

However, as the only cinema in the country capable of showing films on 70mm, the IFI holds regular screenings of the best of what is currently available, and we encourage anyone with an interest in film to experience it for themselves.

SPIELBERG SCI-FI MINI-SEASON NOTES
Notes by David O’Mahony

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND

Steven Spielberg
Saturday, June 6th (15.20)
Film info: 138 mins, USA, 1977, Digital. IFCO PG.

During a series of unexplained events, Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) encounters a UFO on a deserted road. Roy subsequently becomes obsessed with what he perceives as subliminal messages, distancing himself from his family as he learns of a clandestine investigation by scientists, the military, and other survivors of encounters who are attempting to communicate with the otherworldly visitors. Presenting the aliens as benevolent is Spielberg’s masterstroke in a film that contains enough wonder to inspire even the most jaded viewer.

E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL

Steven Spielberg
Sunday, June 7th (15.20)
Film info: 115 mins, USA, 1982, Digital. IFCO G.

Spielberg’s tender suburban fable, a record-breaking sensation on its release, has left an indelible mark on popular cinema. When a meek alien is stranded on Earth, young Elliott forms a secret bond with the creature, shielding it from fearful adults. Blending intimate childhood perspective with awe-inspiring spectacle, Spielberg creates a timeless story of friendship, tinged with the ache of loss, elevated by John Williams’s soaring, unforgettable score.

A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Steven Spielberg
Wednesday, June 17th (20.10)
Film info: 146 mins, USA, 2001, Digital. IFCO 12A.

Having been unable to satisfactorily realise his vision for Brian Aldiss’s 1969 short story, Supertoys Last All Summer Long, Stanley Kubrick gifted the project to Steven Spielberg, who eventually made it after Kubrick’s death in 1999. While not entirely seamless, the result is a fascinating and often brilliant amalgamation of two distinct sensibilities. Set in the late 22nd century, with coastal cities submerged on account of global warming and rising sea levels, the story, which echoes Pinocchio, concerns David (Haley Joel Osment), a mechanical boy programmed to feel love. Abandoned by his adoptive human family, and spurned by society, David, accompanied by his faithful mecha teddy bear, and sex worker robot Gigolo Joe (Jude Law), yearns to somehow become a real boy.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: MINORITY REPORT

Steven Spielberg
Saturday, June 27th (14.00)
Film info: 145 mins, USA, 2002, Digital. IFCO 12A.

Adapted from a story by Philip K. Dick, Spielberg’s sleek, propulsive vision of a near-future where crime is predicted before it occurs is one of his most satisfying pieces of pure entertainment. Tom Cruise’s PreCrime officer John Anderton becomes the system’s next target, forced to flee and question the infallibility of the “precogs.” Blending noir tension with speculative science fiction, Spielberg crafts a gripping meditation on free will, surveillance, and the fragile boundary between justice and control.

Author and screenwriter Derek Landy will introduce Minority Report for IFI Bigger Picture.
