Spielberg’s realisation of a project gifted him by the late Stanley Kubrick is a visually extraordinary and emotionally devastating riff on Pinocchio. Set in a late 22nd century ravaged by global warming, David (Haley Joel Osment), a mechanical boy programmed to feel love, has been abandoned by his adoptive human family, and spurned by society. Accompanied by his faithful mecha teddy bear, and sex worker robot Gigolo Joe (Jude Law), David yearns to somehow become a real boy.
