1st FRI – 18.20 | AN ENGINEER IMAGINES + Q&A A cinematic homage to Peter Rice, one of the most distinguished engineers of the late 20th century, traces his extraordinary career from his Dundalk childhood to his work on the Sydney Opera House, the Pompidou Centre and the Lloyd’s Building, right through to his untimely death in 1992. Followed by a Q&A with director Marcus Robinson and Heidi Rice, hosted by Kevin Barry.
2nd SAT – 17.00 & 20.00 | SONIC YOUTH: 30 YEARS OF DAYDREAM NATION Celebrating the recent thirtieth anniversary of the band’s seminal Daydream Nation album, the IFI is delighted to welcome filmmaker Lance Bangs (director of Slint documentary Breadcrumb Trail) and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley to present a programme of films related to the album, with excerpts from the Bangs-directed concert film along with Charles Atlas’s documentary Put Blood In The Music. Limited tickets remaining for 17.00 show.
4th MON – 18.30 | IFI FRENCH FILM CLUB: SAUVAGE A bracing drama about 22-year-old rent boy Léo (Félix Maritaud) who searches for connection amidst a sea of anonymous clients. Tickets for the 18.30 screening on Monday 4th March cost just €7.80 for IFI and Alliance Française members.
6th WED – 18.30 | BRIEF ENCOUNTERS: WOMEN IN FILM AND TV SHORT FILM SHOWCASE IFI and WFT present this inspiring programme of new short films to coincide with International Women’s Day, selected from a significant volume of work submitted by WFT members, celebrating the Irish film industry’s most talented up-and-coming female creatives. The films will be introduced by filmmakers and a prize for best film (selected by a WFT jury) will be announced on the night.
7th THURS – 18.00 | MAIDEN + SATELLITE Q&A Maiden is the inspirational story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. This preview screening will include a live satellite Q&A with Tracy Edwards and special guests. The film opens on March 8th.
11th MON – 18.15 | IFI FILM CLUB: BORDER Ali Abbasi’s wonderfully strange and imaginative romantic fantasy is based on a short story by John Ajvide Lindqvist – of Let The Right One In fame – and, like the character of Tina, the film is a true original. Join members of the IFI team for an informal discussion following this screening.
11th MON – 20.30 | OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: EVERYBODY KNOWS When a family wedding is interrupted by a shocking crime, secrets and lies that span generations are brought to light in Asghar Farhadi’s (A Separation) layered psychological drama starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. Screening with Hard of Hearing subtitles.
12th TUES – 18.30 | EVENING COURSE: MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE A Six-Week Evening Course on British film since the 1980s.
13th WED – 18.20 | IRISH FOCUS: UNQUIET GRAVES + Q&A The film details how members of the RUC and UDR (a British Army regiment) were centrally involved in the murder of over 120 innocent civilians during the recent conflict in Ireland. Followed by a Q&A with director Seán Murray, hosted by Margaret Urwin (Justice for the Forgotten).
13th WED – 18.40 | FEAST YOUR EYES: THE KINDERGARTEN TEACHER Lisa (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a dissatisfied wife and mother who becomes convinced that one of her pupils is a child prodigy when he begins to recite mature, polished poetry of which he is seemingly the author. Accompanied by a specially selected main course for just €21.

16th SAT – 11.00 | IFI FAMILY: ASH LAD: IN THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING For St Patrick’s weekend, March’s IFI Family slot is this period adventure story in which a poor farmer’s son embarks on a quest to get a reward and save the princess from the wicked Mountain King. Tickets: €5.00 per person, €15.00 family ticket.
16th SAT – 15.00 | IFI & ST PATRICK’S FESTIVAL: BALLROOM OF ROMANCE In this quintessential Irish rural drama, screening as part of the St Patrick’s Festival, Bridie (Brenda Fricker), a lonely farmer’s daughter, goes to the country ballroom where as a young girl she danced and dreamed of a happy marriage. She decides she has just one more night to find a husband. A rare chance to see Pat O’Connor’s film of William Trevor’s short story, also starring Cyril Cusack, Ingrid Craigie, Mick Lally and Niall TóibÍn.
19th TUES – 18.30 | IFI & AEMI: TERROR NULLIUS + Q&A Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, Terror Nullius is a political revenge fable which offers an unwriting of Australian national mythologies. IFI and aemi are delighted that Soda_Jerk will be able to join us for the Irish premiere of their incendiary feature Terror Nullius.
19th TUES – 18.30 | EVENING COURSE: RATCATCHER A Six-Week Evening Course on British film since the 1980s.
20th WED – 20.00 | THE BIGGER PICTURE: COME AND SEE An extremely powerful and harrowing film that is utterly unflinching in its depiction of the horrors of battle, its mixture of lyricism and nightmare makes for an unforgettable experience, and is an incontrovertible reminder of the cost of war to its participants. The final film from Russian director Elem Klimov will be introduced by Frank Berry, writer-director of Michael Inside and I Used To Live Here.

24th SUN – 18.00 | THE GREAT ESCAPE + SATELLITE EVENT To mark the 75th anniversary of the real-life POW escape during World War II from the Luftwaffe-run Stalag Luft III prison in then German-occupied Poland, historian and broadcaster Dan Snow hosts a commemorative evening at the Eventim Apollo in London. This preshow will be followed by a new restoration of the classic war movie, starring Steve McQueen.
24th SUN – 20.20 | OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: THE WHITE CROW Ralph Fiennes’s latest directorial effort sees him working from a script by Sir David Hare to tell the story of legendary ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev and his defection from the Soviet Union to the West. The film crosscuts between his impoverished childhood and his early training, but mainly focuses on the fateful trip of the Kirov Ballet to Paris in 1961. Presented with Open Captions.
