February is here and the month is full of new releases including Oscar hopefuls Moonlight, Toni Erdmann, Fences and Loving, as well as home-grown documentary Meetings with Ivor. Beyond that, the IFI is also playing host to a large number of special events throughout the month, and the best news is that they’re ready to book right now!

I’ve Loved You So Long + Q&A / Saturday 4th – 14.00 In association with AMOPA Ireland, we welcome acclaimed French director Philippe Claudel to the IFI for a screening of his classic drama I’ve Loved You So Long and a Q&A. Tickets for this one are selling fast, so be sure to secure your spot.
IFI Café Bar Pub Quiz / Tuesday 7th – 21.30 The IFI’s Monthly Quiz is back, with challenging rounds of questions at the Café Bar. Get your team together and compete against all comers, with quizmaster Adam Isherwood. Just turn up before 21.30, and get your general knowledge ready!
The Bigger Picture: Magnificent Obsession – Tuesday 14th – 18.30 To celebrate Valentine’s Day we’re bringing Douglas Sirk’s seminal romance back to the big screen. A feast for the senses, with lively performances from Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson. This film includes a special introduction by broadcaster Steven Benedict, and you can read his note here.
ADIFF at the IFI / Saturday Feb 18th – Tuesday 21st We’re delighted to welcome back the Audi Dublin International Film Festival for 2017, with a total of four films to be shown at the IFI. That includes the latest from Aidan Gillen Pickups (which will include a Q&A with the star), an insight into performance art with Amanda Coogan: Long Now, Ken Wadrop’s new documentary The Piano Teacher and engaging doc Photo City.
Rock ‘N’ Roll Cinema: Lost in France + Concert / Tuesday 21st Lost in France is a new documentary which charts the return of a Scottish bands like Mogwai and The Delgados to the site of a French tour they undertook back in the 90s. It’s a heady mix of nostalgia and tunes, which will be followed by a live stream of a concert featuring many of the musicians.
Wild Strawberries: Learning to Drive / Wednesday 22nd – 11.00 This month’s film features the always engaging Patricia Clarkson as a New York book critic who crosses paths with Ben Kingsley’s Sikh driving instructor. A charming and funny film from director Isabel Coixet. This screening is for over 55s and includes a reduced price and free tea/coffee.
IFI & AEMI Projections: Independent Frames / Thursday 23rd – 15.30 & 18.30 Curated and presented by Herb Shellenberger, this presentation examines experimental American animation work from the 70s and 80s from artists who were new to the form. With autobiographical and countercultural elements, the films present unique perspectives on the world.
MExINDEX: As We May Think / Saturday 25th – 12.00 With work by Linda Quinlan, Thaddeus O’Sullivan, Eoghan Ryan and many more, this screening mimics or indicates a possible route through the MExIndex website, a searchable and evolving online database with free access to key information and writing on experimental and visual arts-based moving image works by Irish and Ireland-based artists. This screening will be followed by a discursive event at Wood Quay Venue.
IFI Family: Beauty and the Beast / Sunday 25th – 11.00 Revisit this Tale as Old as Time, with the bookish Belle and the baleful Beast. Disney’s classic animation is getting the live action treatment with Emma Watson this year, but the 1991 original belongs on the big screen.
Irish Focus: IFI & IMMA The Welcome of Tomás Ó Hallissy / Monday 27th – 18.30 A new film work by Irish-born, Turner Prize-winning artist Duncan Campbell, filmed in Kerry and integrating new material with footage from The Village (1968 – screening on the 28th of Feb), a film which Campbell encountered during research at the IFI Irish Film Archive. Followed by a conversation with Duncan Campbell and Sarah Glennie, Director, IMMA.
Feast Your Eyes: The Founder / Monday 27th – 18.30 Michael Keaton leads the cast as Ray Croc. You may never have heard of him but he’s the man responsible for creating the fast food titan which is McDonalds today. The film follows the dramatic events which led to Croc wresting control of the company from the brothers who founded it. Feast Your Eyes presents a film and dinner combined ticket for €20.
IFI Film Club: Moonlight + Discussion / Tuesday 28th – 18.00 Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-nominated Moonlight is playing at the IFI from the 17th of February and this special screening also includes a discussion about the film. Members of the IFI team will start the conversation after the credits roll, and the audience is encouraged to get involved in these informal sessions.
From the Vaults: The Village / Tuesday 28th – 18.30 For February, this documentary examines the effect of modernisation on the small community of Dún Chaoin in Co. Kerry. The lively cast of local characters interact with the tourists and day to day life unspools before our eyes.
Wine and Tapas Evening in the Café Bar / Tuesday 28th – 19.30 Join us for a special Spanish-themed evening of food and wine, with carefully selected and exclusive wines from Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Galicia.
