18th TUES – 18.30 | THE BISHOP’S STORY (FROM THE VAULTS)
A love story is revealed through conversations between an elderly bishop (Donal McCann) and a younger priest in a ‘retreat’ house catering for members of religious orders. The bishop, a returned missionary, violated the laws of the Catholic Church when, as a young curate on a remote island, he had an affair with his housekeeper (Maggie Fegan), the tragic outcome of which profoundly changed his beliefs.The film provides a fitting vehicle for the haunting score by Roger Doyle who will introduce the film.

19th WED – 18.30 | AGNÈS VARDA: THE GLEANERS AND I
In this documentary Varda puts herself amongst a thriving scavenging culture living on the fringes of mainstream society, using her lightweight little camera to glean images as her subjects pick remnants from fields, orchards, roadsides and supermarkets.

20th THURS – 13.50 | OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: THE RIDER
In South Dakota, the promising career of rodeo rider Brady (Brady Jandreau) is derailed by a serious head injury. Faced with uncertainty, Brady must find a place for himself in a world that does not offer him a hopeful future. This screening will include subtitles for those hard of hearing.

21st FRI – 18.00 | THE LITTLE STRANGER + Q&A with director LENNY ABRAHAMSON
Director Lenny Abrahamson returns with this adaptation of the novel by Sarah Waters. Following the Second World War, Dr. Faraday (Domhnall Gleeson) returns to practice in his home village. Intrigued by Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked as housemaid, he strikes up a relationship with its occupants, the Ayres family: Roderick (Will Poulter), Caroline (Ruth Wilson), and their mother (Charlotte Rampling). The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Abrahamson.

21st FRI – 18.15 / 19.00 / 19.45 | CULTURE NIGHT: SHORT AND SWEET
The IFI celebrates Culture Night with free screenings of Irish shorts from the IFI Irish Film Archive. Three distinct programmes of family friendly films, dating from the 1940s to the present day, offer audiences a tour through the history of short film production in Ireland. The programme includes films made for and about children and young people, and is guaranteed to entertain and inform audiences with a colourful array of newsreels, animations, dramas and public information films. Tickets are free and available from the IFI Box Office on the night.

22nd SAT – 18.20 | THE GO-BETWEENS: RIGHT HERE (ROCK’N’ROLL CINEMA)
The Go-Betweens: Right Here uncovers the intensely passionate, creative and fraught relationships behind one of the most loved and influential bands in Australian rock history. Kriv Stenders’s documentary is not only the story of a creative adventure that spanned three decades, through countless successes, failures, romances, break-ups, betrayals, triumphs, and tragedies, but is a compelling investigation into the unpredictable and precarious lives of musicians that reveals the true price of being in a cult band trying to survive the harsh realities of an exploitative music industry.

23rd SUN – 13.00 | OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: THE LITTLE STRANGER

24th MON – 18.45 | FEAST YOUR EYES: FACES PLACES
September’s pairing of a new release and a specially devised main course menu will Agnès Varda and JR’s Oscar-nominated Faces Places. Nonagenarian and treasure of world cinema Agnès Varda teams up with thirty-something street artist JR for this docu-travelogue honouring the faces, places, and fast-disappearing traditions of rural France. The menu for this month will include a choice of: Roasted Beetroot and Goats’ Cheese Salad; Hake with Creamy Leeks; and Coq au Vin. Tickets cost €20, free list suspended.

25th TUES – 18.30 | IFI FRENCH FILM CLUB: FACES PLACES
Nonagenarian and treasure of world cinema Agnès Varda teams up with thirty-something street artist JR for this docu-travelogue honouring the faces, places, and fast-disappearing traditions of rural France. Tickets for this screening cost just €7.50 for IFI and Alliance Française members.

26th WED – 11.00 | WILD STRAWBERRIES: THE LITTLE STRANGER
This latest feature from Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson is an adaptation of Sarah Waters’s gothic novel starring Domhnall Gleeson as a country doctor called to a crumbling 18th century estate. Befriending the family, he becomes aware of their precarious financial state. Wild Strawberries is our monthly film club for the over 55s. Tickets cost €4.25 incl tea or coffee.

26th WED – 20.40 | OPEN CAPTIONED SCREENING: THE LITTLE STRANGER

26th WED to 30th SUN | IFI DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL
The IFI Documentary Festival returns this September with a selection of the best new documentaries from Ireland and across the globe. This year’s programme includes the world première of Marcus Robinson’s An Engineer Imagines, the Irish première of Bing Liu’s Minding the Gap, and Steven Eastwood’s moving Island. The festival opens on Wednesday 26th and runs until Sunday 30th.
