From acknowledged masters of inestimable influence such as Akira Kurosawa, Yasujirô Ozu, and Kenji Mizoguchi, through the popular kaiju genre of the 1950s and ‘60s that introduced audiences to creatures such as Godzilla and Gamera, and up to contemporary directors such as Takeshi Kitano and Hirokazu Kore-eda, as well as the phenomenal popularity of anime, Japanese cinema continues to hold a unique place in global culture, admired by cinephiles the world over. This short season focuses on the work of Ozu and Kurosawa, with additional titles examining the Japanese approach to sexuality. In these melodramas and historical epics can be seen fascinating insights into post-WWII Japanese society, as well as the inspiration for the work of any number of subsequent international filmmakers.
