JULY 2023 AT THE IFI

June 28th 2023: This July, the Irish Film Institute (IFI) presents a selection of highly-anticipated international releases, including Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, screening on 70mm film exclusively at the IFI. From July 1st to 30th, the IFI is proud to present Fallout, a season of films and documentaries exploring the international perspectives on the subject of nuclear weapons usage, which hopes to offer audiences a valuable understanding of the consequences of what was achieved at Los Alamos in July, 1945.

From Friday 7th, documentary Name Me Lawand, following a young Kurdish boy’s progress in learning British Sign Language and discovering a new way to express himself (preview screening + ISL-interpreted Q&A taking place on Sunday 2nd); Quentin Dupieux’s latest absurdist feature Smoking Causes Coughing; and The Damned Don’t Cry, which explores transgressive sexuality, restrictive cultural expectations and the weight of colonial history, open in IFI Cinemas.

Coming to IFI Cinemas from Friday 14th is Medusa, centring on a conservative social media maven who leads her followers in inflicting physical violence on women they believe have strayed from the righteous path; Squaring the Circle, a new documentary telling the story of Hipgnosis, the creative duo behind iconic album cover art such as The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here; and While We Watched, gripping newsroom documentary chronicling the work of broadcast journalist Ravish Kumar.

Screening from Friday 21st are Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt, and screening exclusively at the IFI on 70mm film.

My Name is is Alfred Hitchcock, the latest documentary from director Mark Cousins on the film auteur, also screens at the IFI from Friday 21st. From Friday 28th, Sofia Coppola’s feature directorial debut The Virgin Suicides screens at the IFI, in stunningly restored 4K.

From Saturday 1st to Sunday 30th, the IFI presents Fallout, a season of films and documentaries exploring the international perspectives on the subject of nuclear weapons usage, including titles such as Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Fail Safe, In This Corner of the World, Barefoot Gen, The War Game, Godzilla and more. In special events, the IFI is happy to screen the global premiere of Ziggy Stardust, D.A. Pennebaker’s recording of Bowie’s retirement performance of the aforementioned persona, on Monday 3rd, preceded by an hour-long recorded panel discussion discussing the artist’s legacy. The Mystery Matinee on Sunday 9th offers audiences the chance to see a surprise film, new or old, for only €6.

In association with The Ark Wolfwalkers exhibition, this month IFI Family presents three screenings of the Cartoon Saloon animated feature on Saturday 8th, Tuesday 18th and Thursday, August 3rd. In addition to these screenings, ahead of our annual IFI Family Film Festival taking place Friday, August 18th to Sunday, August 20th, the IFI Family will screen a dazzling collection of specially curated live-action and animated short films, all previously screened at the festival, on Sunday 30th.

This month the IFI’s From The Vaults strand and Wild Strawberries programme, our monthly film club for over 55s, together offer screenings of Dancing at Lughnasa, starring Meryl Streep and Michael Gambon, on Thursday 20th (FTV), Wednesday 26th and Friday 28th (WS).

The Bigger Picture strand this month will present a screening of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort on Thursday 13th, introduced by writer Anna Carey. On Monday 17th, our EAFFI Discoveries strand returns with Waiting For The Light To Change, introduced by Trà My Nguyen Hoang, and preceded by a screening of short film Introspection, directed by Ying Qi Tang.

This month’s Irish Focus strand presents Surrender Your Horns, followed by a Q&A with director Bryony Dunne, hosted by Alice Butler (aemi), screening in-cinema on Wednesday 5th. This month’s Archive at Lunchtime programme, Here Comes The Summer, screens for free at lunchtimes everyday in July.

From Tuesday 18th, the IFI is delighted to have our Joe Comerford retrospective season come to IFI@Home, allowing audiences across the Republic of Ireland a rare chance to watch these films from the comfort of their own home, with titles including classics such as High Boot Benny and a newly-remastered Reefer and the Model.
