JANUARY 2024 AT THE IFI

December 19th 2023: This January, the Irish Film Institute (IFI) presents a selection of highly-anticipated new releases, including Priscilla, Poor Things, and All of Us Strangers. From Sunday 7th to Sunday 14th, the IFI and First Fortnight will present three events at our Eustace Street venue, and from Saturday 27th to Sunday 28th, TradFest Temple Bar returns to the IFI to jointly present two documentary screenings.

From Friday 5th, Sofia Coppola’s long-awaited adaptation Priscilla, starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, opens at the IFI, with special preview screenings taking place from Monday 1st. Screening from Friday 12th is Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest masterpiece Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Mark Ruffalo, and The Disappearance of Shere Hite, a new revelatory portrait of the feminist sex researcher and former model.

From Friday 19th, a re-release of master filmmaker Werner Herzog’s The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, and Alexander Payne’s bittersweet comedy-drama The Holdovers screen in IFI Cinemas. Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, and Lois Patiño’s Samsara, an experiential exploration of life and what lies beyond, open in-cinema from Friday 26th.

From January 7th to 14th, the IFI is proud to partner once again with First Fortnight, the multidisciplinary arts festival which creatively challenges stigma and bias around mental health, presenting three screenings: Writing Home, which explores programme of creative engagement for homeless services users developed by poet Colm Keegan, accompanied by short film Being Put Back Together, screening on Sunday 7th; The Year Between, the debut feature from director Alex Heller, screening on Thursday 11th; and the Feeling Fine Short Film Programme, curated as part of our monthly IFI Family strand, screening on Sunday 14th.

In January, the IFI and TradFest Temple Bar will present two screenings as part of this year’s festivities: Janis Ian & The Art of Song (working title), a work-in-progress documentary following the life and artistry of the American singer-songwriter, screening Saturday 27th; and Seán Keane: A Portrait of an Artist, a new documentary examining the work and talents of the late artist, also presented as part of our monthly Irish Focus strand.

This month’s Archive at Lunchtime programme, Radharc in Britain, presents two episodes from the programme which document the experience of the Irish in the UK in the 1960s, screening for free at lunchtime on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays in January. On Saturday 6th, the IFI’s From The Vaults strand presents John Huston’s The Dead, screening on original 35mm and introduced by actress Ingrid Craigie.

On Sunday 21st, the Mystery Matinee offers audiences the chance to see a surprise film, new or old, for only €6.20. Ahead of its release on February 2nd, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest will have three special preview screenings at the IFI on Saturday 20th, Sunday 21st, and Sunday 27th, with the latter marking International Holocaust Memorial Day.

On Saturday 25th, the IFI will present an encore screening of Your Fat Friend, following its sold-out Irish Premiere at the IFI Documentary Festival, accompanied by a post-screening Q&A with director Jeanie Finlay and subject Aubrey Gordon, hosted by Louise McSharry. The Wild Strawberries programme, our monthly film club for over 55s, offers screenings of Chevalier on Friday 26th and Wednesday 31st.

On IFI@Home from Friday 19th, the IFI will present MyFrenchFilmFestival, an innovative concept designed to showcase the latest generation of French-language filmmakers and give internet users across the globe the chance to discover a selection of French-language feature films and shorts presented at major international festivals, subtitled in many languages.
