February 24th 2023: This March, the Irish Film Institute (IFI) presents a selection of Irish and international new releases, including About Joan, God’s Creatures, starring Paul Mescal, and Academy Award-nominated feature Close. The IFI is delighted to present a retrospective dedicated to Japanese actress and forgotten auteur Kinuyo Tanaka, screening in-cinema for the first time in Ireland from Saturday 4th to Sunday 19th. This month, the IFI is proud to once again host the East Asia Film Festival Ireland, with screenings taking place at our Temple Bar home from Thursday, March 30th to Sunday, April 2nd.From Friday 3rd, new Irish-French release About Joan, starring Academy Award-nominated Isabelle Huppert, will open exclusively in IFI Cinemas. Coming-of-age feature Close, nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature, and environmental documentary Fashion Reimagined also open on Friday 3rd. Opening at the IFI from Friday 10th are IFI Documentary Festival 2022 highlight The Artist & The Wall of Death, new music documentary Meet Me in the Bathroom, and Academy Award-nominated feature Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom.Screening from Friday 17th are Neil Jordan’s latest feature Marlowe, starring Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger, and Rebecca Zlotowski’s Other People’s Children, starring Virginie Efira. Coming to IFI Cinemas from Friday 24th are The Beasts, following its debut at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Léa Mysius’s follow-up to Ava, The Five Devils, and highly-anticipated God’s Creatures, starring Paul Mescal and Emily Watson. From Friday 31st, Dominik Moll’s enthralling police procedural The Night of the 12th screens at the IFI.From March 4th to 19th, the IFI is delighted to showcase the directed works of Japanese actress Kinuyo Tanaka, one of the most popular and successful stars of Japanese cinema. Although justly renowned for her acting collaborations with master filmmakers such as Yasujirõ Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Mikio Naruse, the films in this season pay tribute to her work as a director and represent a complete retrospective of her work behind the camera, a celebration of an overlooked auteur, including titles such as Girls of the Night, The Wandering Princess and Forever a Woman. Tickets are on sale now on the IFI website, with multi-film passes available from the IFI Box Office.The IFI will present a special screening of Sidney Poitier’s directorial debut Buck and the Preacher on Saturday 4th, offering the opportunity to see this film in its new 4K restoration. On Thursday 9th, the IFI is delighted to present the first screening in Ireland dedicated to the solo and collaborative work of internationally acclaimed American artist and filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson, curated by aemi with thanks to producer Madeleine Molyneaux of Picture Palace Pictures. The Bigger Picture strand this month will present a screening of The Nowhere Inn on Tuesday 7th, introduced by Sarah Corcoran of the Pillow Queens. To mark International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8th, the IFI is delighted to host Directed By Her, a diverse selection of short form work, including narrative fiction, documentary, experimental films, and music videos, all directed by women, presented and curated by the GALPAL Collective. The screenings will be followed by a panel hosted by Ashley Chadamoyo Makombe. Outside of our Eustace Street venue, the IFI will offer audiences worldwide the chance to watch the newly-restored This Other Eden, the first Irish feature to be directed by a woman, the prolific British director Muriel Box, available for free from Wednesday 8th to Friday 10th online on the IFI Archive Player.March’s Archive at Lunchtime programme, St. Patrick’s Miscellany, presents two short films, Top of the Morning and Trial at Tara, which focus on our patron saint, screening for free at lunchtimes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. From The Vaults in March will pay tribute to the late Tom Collins, a much-missed pillar of the Irish film community, with a screening of Kings on Monday 13th, introduced by the filmmaker’s daughter film programmer Eibh O’Brien Collins.This month’s Irish Focus strand presents Concrete Keys, an experimental feature from interdisciplinary artist Natasha Bourke, screening in-cinema on Wednesday 15th, followed by a Q&A with Alice Butler of aemi. From Saturday 18th, the IFI will screen a new 4K restoration of Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence to mark its 30th anniversary. The Mystery Matinee on Sunday 19th offers audiences the chance to see a surprise film, new or old, for only €6. This month, Wild Strawberries, the monthly film club for over 55s, offers screenings of The Big Hit on Wednesday 29th and Friday 31st. March’s IFI Family presents a screening of Raya and the Last Dragon on Sunday 26th, with special family and child ticket pricing available.The IFI is proud to once again work with the East Asia Film Festival Ireland to present the seventh edition of the festival from Thursday March 30th to Saturday April 2nd, bringing works from prominent and emerging writers and directors from diverse cultural and social backgrounds across East Asian cinema to Irish audiences.
