JUNE 2023 AT THE IFI

May 26th 2023: This June, the Irish Film Institute (IFI) presents a selection of Irish and international new releases, including Reality, Sunlight, and Asteroid City. The IFI is delighted to showcase a retrospective dedicated to American actor Paul Newman, screening in-cinema from Saturday 3rd to Wednesday 28th.

From Friday 2nd, Carmen, starring Paul Mescal and Melissa Barrera; Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt, presented in a new 4K restoration; Reality, starring Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria); and beloved ’90s classic Thelma & Louise screen at the IFI.

Coming to IFI Cinemas from Friday 9th is Chevalier, telling the story of French aristocrat Joseph Bologne AKA Chevalier de Saint-Georges, and War Pony, winner of the top prize in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard sidebar in 2022. Opening in-cinema from Friday 16th is Dionne Edwards’s Pretty Red Dress, starring Alexandra Burke and Natey Jones, and Sunlight, Claire Dix’s debut feature (preview screening taking place at the IFI on Thursday 15th).

Wes Anderson’s latest star-studded feature Asteroid City, and new documentary The Last Rider, recounting the extraordinary life of cyclist Greg LeMond, open at the IFI from Friday 23rd. From Friday 30th, new French-language releases La Syndicaliste, telling the true story of Irish whistleblower Maureen Kearney, and Mother and Son, an engrossing chronicle of the construction and deconstruction of a family, screen in IFI Cinemas.

From Saturday 3rd to Wednesday 28th, the IFI is proud to showcase an in-cinema season dedicated to classic Hollywood movie star Paul Newman, Paul Newman: American Icon. Screening titles will include Cool Hand Luke, The Towering Inferno, The Color of Money and more. Multi-film passes available from IFI Box Office. On IFI@Home, from Monday 19th to Monday July 17th, the IFI is also proud to present a dedicated season of films directed by American actor/director John Cassavetes, John Cassavetes: American Auteur, available to stream nationwide.

From The Vaults in collaboration with the Bloomsday Film Festival in June presents a one-off screening on Wednesday 14th of Alive Alive O, Sé Merry Doyle’s homage to Dublin’s street traders, in association with the Friends of the Iveagh Market. To mark Bloomsday this year, the IFI and Bloomsday Film Festival will present a screening of Translating Ulysses on Friday 16th, with filmmakers Aylin Kuryel and Fırat Yücel in attendance. Also on Friday 16th, the IFI in collaboration with the festival are proud to welcome director Charlie Kaufman for the Irish cinema premiere of I’m Thinking of Ending Things, followed by a Q&A with the director. Ahead of this screening, the IFI and Bloomsday Film Festival will screen Charlie Kaufman’s short film Jackals and Fireflies on Thursday 15th, followed by a post-screening conversation with the director and with poet Eva H.D.

The Mystery Matinee on Sunday 18th offers audiences the chance to see a surprise film, new or old, for only €6. On Wednesday 21st, the IFI will mark the summer solstice with a screening of cult classic The Wicker Man, in the year of its 50th anniversary. The screening will be followed by a show recorded in London on May 1st, presented by Edith Bowman, and featuring actress Britt Ekland and writer-actor Reece Shearsmith, with performances from the iconic soundtrack.

The Bigger Picture strand this month will present a screening of The Birdcage on Thursday 22nd, introduced by writer, editor and programmer James Hudson. On Tuesday 27th, the IFI and the Small Trans Film Club present a screening of short films which celebrate the trans body and its capacity for pleasure, The Pink Stripe: Trans Sex on Screen.

This month’s Irish Focus strand presents Dancer from the Dance, a programme of new Irish dance short films presented in collaboration with the Irish Modern Dance Theatre as part of Dancer from the Dance Festival of Irish Choreography, screening in-cinema on Monday 26th. This month’s Archive at Lunchtime programme, Shall We Dance?, presents two programmes of short dance films, screening for free at lunchtimes everyday in June.

This month, Wild Strawberries, the monthly film club for over 55s, offers screenings of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry on Wednesday 28th (Open Captioned) and Friday 30th. June’s IFI Family screening presents The Railway Children Return on Sunday 25th, with special family and child tickets available. On Thursday 29th, the IFI and aemi will screen Súitú, a programme of short films, followed by a Q&A with artists featured in the programme.

From Friday 2nd, the IFI is delighted to have our Joe Comerford retrospective season come to IFI@Home, allowing audiences across the Republic of Ireland a rare chance to watch these films from the comfort of their own home, with titles including classics such as High Boot Benny and a newly-remastered Reefer and the Model.
