Screen Actors Guild Awards Winners – La La Land, Fences and Moonlight Triumph

The 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place last night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Falling between the huge events of the Golden Globes and the Oscars, the SAG Awards were a glitzy affair, with a huge number of stars turning out for the occasion. And it’s a hugely important night too, because the actors who win have been truly chosen by their peers, and it’s often a good indication of who will take the prizes at the Oscars.

The winners are spread across the worlds of film and TV, and there were some familiar faces and a few upsets.

Denzel Washington picked up the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role award for his part in Fences. This gong was all but assumed to be going to Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea, so much so that awards-vet Washington hadn’t even prepared a speech.

For Female Actor in a Lead Role, Emma Stone scored her third SAG Award, and her first to not be part of an ensemble, for her part in La La Land against stiff competition. Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Viola Davis (Fences) picked up Supporting Player awards and the ensemble for film went to Hidden Figures.

La La Land is currently playing at the IFI (book tickets) and Moonlight arrives in a special preview engagement from the 10th of February, you can get more information here.
