October 26th 2023: This November, the Irish Film Institute (IFI) presents a selection of highly-anticipated new releases, including Fingernails, How To Have Sex, Anatomy of a Fall and Dream Scenario. From Wednesday November 15th to Sunday November 26th, the IFI French Film Festival returns with a jam-packed programme of the latest French-language masterpieces.
From Friday 3rd, Dance First, a sweeping account of the life of Irish playwright Samuel Beckett; Fingernails, starring Jessie Buckley, Jeremy Allen White, and Riz Ahmed; Molly Manning Walker’s debut feature How To Have Sex; and Margo Harkin’s authoritative documentary Stolen open in IFI Cinemas. The opening night screening of Stolen at 18.15 will be followed by a Q&A with the director, hosted by journalist Una Mullally.
Screening from Friday 10th is Anatomy of a Fall, a deserving winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and Dream Scenario, Kristoffer Borgli’s follow-up to 2022’s Sick of Myself, starring Nicolas Cage and Michael Cera. A special preview screening, the Irish premiere of Anatomy of a Fall will take place at the IFI on Wednesday 8th.
From Friday 17th, Todd Haynes’s latest feature May December, starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, and Ken Wardrop’s So This is Christmas open at the IFI. The Eternal Daughter, Joanna Hogg’s latest release which continues the collaboration between the director, actress Tilda Swinton, and executive producer Martin Scorsese opens in-cinema from Friday 24th.
From Wednesday 15th to Sunday 26th, the IFI French Film Festival, the IFI’s flagship festival, returns, with works exploring a wide range of subjects by many renowned and established directors, as well as showcasing exciting new voices in cinema. Highlights in the programme include opening night gala screening The Animal Kingdom; Cédric Kahn’s The Goldman Case; All Your Faces, starring Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Philippe Garrel’s The Plough. This year will also see a programme of screenings from renowned director Leos Carax, with three of his films presented with director Q&As, alongside an in-conversation event with Leos Carax on Saturday 18th. This month’s Archive at Lunchtime programme, Unplanned, presents three short films, Statistic, Fruit 15, and Blessed Fruit, screening for free at lunchtime on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays in November. On Thursday 2nd, the IFI’s From The Vaults strand presents Hush-a-Bye Baby, starring Emer McCourt and Sinéad O’Connor, introduced by director Margo Harkin.
On Sunday 12th, the Mystery Matinee offers audiences the chance to see a surprise film, new or old, for only €6.50. November’s Irish Focus strand presents The United Irishmen, a documentary telling the tale of the Irish revolutionaries, screening in-cinema on Tuesday 14th, followed by a Q&A with director Alan Gilsenan, hosted by Tara Brady.
On Wednesday 29th, our EAFFI Discoveries strand returns with Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, winner of the Caméra d’Or for Best First Film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. On Thursday 30th, the IFI and Women in Film and Television Ireland present Brief Encounters with Women 2023, a programme of seven short dramas and one non-narrative film celebrates the breadth and strength of work being made by new and established women filmmakers in Ireland today, supported by Coimisiún na Meán.
Documentary Is There Anybody Out There? screens at the IFI on Monday 27th, followed by a Q&A with director Ella Glendining. The Bigger Picture strand in November will present a screening of Mind Game on Tuesday 28th, introduced by animator Eimhin McNamara.
The Wild Strawberries programme, our monthly film club for over 55s, offers screenings of The Lesson on Friday 24th and Wednesday 29th. November’s IFI Family screening is French animation Chicken for Linda!, screening in-cinema on Sunday 26th.
