CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S OPPENHEIMER BECOMES THE TOP GROSSING FILM AT THE IRISH FILM INSTITUTE

August 25th 2023: The Irish Film Institute (IFI) is delighted to announce that Christopher Nolan’s biographical epic Oppenheimer has become the highest grossing film for the IFI, screening on luminous 70mm, 35mm, and Digital.

Oppenheimer has overtaken An Cailín Ciúin as the highest Box Office earning film at the IFI. An Cailín Ciúin‘s success from 2022 – 2023 saw the film overtake Nolan’s Dunkirk (which also screened on 70mm), as the previous holder of the title.

Speaking about this phenomenal milestone, IFI Cinema Programmer Kevin Coyne said, ‘The success of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer at the IFI is a tribute to the director’s ability to create mature, thought-provoking films that are best enjoyed and appreciated on the big screen, with an audience of fellow film fans. We are particularly pleased to be able to present the work of someone who is such an advocate for the cinema experience on this magnificent 70mm format, as he prefers’.

Based on Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, Nolan directed Oppenheimer from his own screenplay, and filmed on IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, with Irish actor Cillian Murphy in the lead role, as the eponymous J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. The star-studded cast also includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr. and Dylan Arnold, with the ensemble supporting cast including Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh.
