Writing for Rolling Stone in 1999, David Bowie proclaimed, “One of the most important female bands in American rock has been buried without a trace. And that is Fanny . . . Revivify Fanny. And I will feel that my work is done”. Bobbi Jo Hart’s admirable documentary shows the truth of Bowie’s words in its portrayal of a band of pioneers, one of the first all-female rock bands, and a self-formed band that included queer and Filipina American bandmates. Despite the acclaim of peers and critics, high-profile tours, and hit records, the band had faded from view before recently reforming and once again blazing a trail, this time for older women in rock.
