POWELL AND PRESSBURGER: THE EDGE OF THE WORLD + RETURN TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD

Director: Michael Powell

81 mins, UK, 1937, Digital, Black & White

Michael Powell’s The Edge Of The World, which predates his collaboration with Emeric Pressburger, was the first truly significant film of his career, which had previously comprised impersonal work created to satisfy the law. It is a poignant account of the depopulation of one of Scotland’s isolated outer islands and the subsequent loss of a way of life and its traditions.

The film will screen with Powell’s short, Return To The Edge Of The World (23 mins, 1978), which recounts the difficulties of the production when filming on the isle of Foula, which can be seen in a present-day context in Ultima Thule, screening as part of this month’s Kinopolis festival.

Screening as part our Powell & Pressburger season, December 2nd – 20th.
