Past, Present & Future
“Films transport us to another place in a way that even the most beautiful, evocative words never can. If we lose our films, we lost that other place forever.”
– Saoirse Ronan
Saving film for generations to come….
As the home of film in Ireland, Irish Film Institute (IFI) is an inspiring creative influence, promoting a wider understanding of film culture and its critical importance through exhibition, preservation and education.
IFI preserves Ireland’s rich and unique moving image heritage for current and future generations. We are the custodians of the National Film & Moving Image Collection – comprising an ever-growing collection of over 45,000 film reels and broadcast tapes from 1897 to the present day.
This chronicles the social, political and cultural development of modern Ireland through newsreels, documentaries, features, animation and more. IFI believes in access to film for everyone and the free IFI Player ensures that our film collections are shared with as many people as possible around the world.
The work of the IFI Irish Film Archive is vital in preserving and safeguarding Ireland’s unique moving image heritage, and it is often a battle against time to save critical and vulnerable footage from being lost forever due to deterioration. We are seeking your kind support to help us in our ambition to conserve our past to inform our present and future.
