Always a highlight of the IFI calendar, we’re delighted that it’s time once again for Horrorthon. As Ireland’s leading genre film festival, the programme features the best new work, Irish and international, to have appeared on the festival circuit in the past year, presenting these titles alongside previews of upcoming releases and screenings of old favourites.

With over 30 titles confirmed, almost all receiving their Irish premieres, this year promises to offer fans delights from across the full spectrum of the genre. The full line-up will be announced closer to the time, but for now, here’s a small selection of what lies in store (click here for the full programme).

Introduction and notes on individual films by Kevin Coyne.

68 KILL
TRENT HAAGA

AnnaLynne McCord (Excision, 2012) plays Liza, a former stripper who persuades her boyfriend, sewer worker Chip, to help her steal $68,000 from her landlord’s home. When the plan goes wrong, the two flee the scene with Violet, unanticipated witness and now hostage. When he discovers Liza’s plans for Violet, Chip tries to rescue the girl, with his girlfriend in pursuit. Laced with black humour, this is a true midnight movie.

HABIT
SIMEON HALLIGAN

Adapted from the novel by Stephen McGeagh, Simeon Halligan’s Habit is set in the dark, troubled underbelly of Manchester. Michael, a man with no direction in life, meets Lee (Jessica Barden), who works in a massage parlour, and helps him get a job as a doorman there. After witnessing the violent death of one of the punters, Michael is drawn deeper into the club’s secrets in this gritty British horror.

THE ENDLESS
JUSTIN BENSON, AARON MOORHEAD

The directors of Spring (2014) return with a surprising and unpredictable film that burrows its way under the viewer’s skin. Two brothers struggling to make ends meet receive a videotape from the cult they escaped from a decade previously, and which they have since publicly denounced, that entices them into returning to the cult’s property, Camp Arcadia. What starts as a seemingly benign visit becomes something else as unnerving details accumulate.

TRAGEDY GIRLS
TYLER MCINTYRE

From the director of Patchwork, one of the hits of last year’s festival, comes one of the highlights of this year’s festival. Besties Sadie (Deadpool’s Brianna Hildebrand) and McKayla (Alexandra Shipp, X-Men: Apocalypse) run a social media account dedicated to serial killers before deciding that committing murders themselves will only increase their online popularity. This extremely funny mix of slasher and high school films is sure to leave audiences wanting more.

The festival runs October 26th to 30th 2017.
