In defining the nation state for the purpose of a fiction film narrative, how have filmmakers’ views altered over the years?

In this commemorative year we are prompted to recall events that led to the foundation of the Irish State, so it is timely to consider how different filmmakers have defined the nation, and contributed to a diverse catalogue of narratives, albeit with fairly recurrent themes.

Our Spring 2016 Evening Course will examine six films in which a particular vision of an Irish state is portrayed. The films are not presented as definitive, but rather operate within a range of socio-cultural, economic, religious and political contexts. They offer a  view unique to the filmmaker, which will be considered through follow-up discussions.

The course will run on consecutive Tuesdays, commencing at 18.30. Order may vary slightly.
