IFI Press Release 10th May 2012
Vampyr with live musical accompaniment from Steven Severin, co-founder of Siouxsie and the Banshees, at the IFI on May 18th
Following on from last month’s Carl Dreyer season, the IFI is delighted to present a reprise screening of Vampyr with live musical accompaniment by Steven Severin on May 18th at 18.30.
A co-founding member of and driving force behind Siouxsie and the Banshees, Severin has in recent years turned his talents towards original scores for film, including Jean Cocteau’s Blood of a Poet. Severing particular musical sensibilities are well suited to Dreyer’s eerie, experimental masterpiece. Vampyr begins with a young student of the occult arriving at an inn and receiving a mysterious package containing a book about vampires. His following experiences in a world of shadowy beings and deathly visions, created through Dreyer’s original camerawork and editing, feel as intangible as they are terrifying.
A story based on Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, Vampyr is one of Dreyer’s key works and with Steven Severin’s synthesised, atmospheric soundscape as accompaniment, this will prove a unique cinematic experience for fans of either man.
Tickets cost €13 and are available now from the IFI Box Office on 01 679 3477 or online at www.ifi.ie.
