October Programme Highlights
Festivals Thursday 23rd – Monday 27th The most horrifying event in the Irish film calendar, IFI HORRORTHON, returns to the Irish Film Institute from Thursday, October 23rd to Monday, October 27th.
Tickets and full festival programme available now on the IFI website. Festival bundles and passes available in-person or by phone at IFI Box Office.
IFI Special Events Thursday 9th Our Irish Focus strand this month presents Temptation of Influence, in association with Architecture at the Edge, an organisation dedicated to the promotion of architecture as culture. This filmic essay explores how architectural ideas are passed down, reinterpreted and inevitably misread across generations, and is followed by a Q&A with director Marko Milovanovic, hosted by Peter Carroll (A2 Architects/ SAUL).
Tuesday 14th October’s EAFFI Discoveries selection is Love On Trial, an intriguing new film by Japanese writer-director Kōji Fukada which follows a rising J-Pop idol (played by former idol Kyoko Saito) in girl band Happyfanfare, and her journey from fantasy to harsh reality. The screening will be introduced by Dr Kim-Marie Spence (School of Arts, English and Languages, Queen’s University Belfast).
Wednesday 15th Join us on Wednesday 15th for our special half-day event for teenagers aged 15-19, IFI Careers in Animation! If you are curious about college and thinking about a career in animation, this is the event for you.
Later that day, the IFI will partner with our friends at aemi to present Robina Rose’s Nightshift, an underseen jewel from the 1980s British avant-garde. The screening will be introduced by pioneering filmmaker Pat Murphy, who was a founding member of feminist film distributor Circles alongside Robina Rose, and will be preceded by a screening of film Meshes in the Afternoon (dir. Maya Deren).
Thursday 16th Marking the 125th anniversary of Oscar Wilde’s death, we are delighted to present De Profundis, in partnership with the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) and Oscariana: A Wilde Dublin Festival. This new film, produced by MoLI, revisits this moving and richly layered text – perhaps the most raw and honest version of Wilde available to us, at times deeply philosophical, at times white with rage, at times heartbreakingly tender. Alongside images of key locations, passages are read by a host of LGBTQ+ writers, artists and activists, including Paul D’Alton, Jane Clarke, Naoise Dolan, Seán Hewitt, Adiba Jaigirdar, Sonya Kelly, Bulelani Mfaco, Una Mullally, Sonya Mulligan, Katherine O’Donnell, Declan Toohey, and Tonie Walsh. The screening will be followed by a conversation with writer Katherine O’Donnell and MoLI’s Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, hosted by Margaret Kelleher (UCD).
Wednesday 22nd Mitski: The Land converts the magic and majesty of witnessing Mitski live onto screen. Filmed over three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre in 2024, this is a thrilling portrayal of what kept hundreds of thousands of fans rapt at venues across the globe. Screening in IFI Cinemas on Wednesday 22nd only!
Wednesday 29th The IFI From The Vaults strand this month presents a brand new restoration of The Eclipse, Conor McPherson’s mature and enigmatic love story tinged with the supernatural starring Ciarán Hinds, Iben Hjejle, and Aidan Quinn. This digital restoration from original 35mm elements has been created by the IFI Irish Film Archive for IFI’s Digital Restoration Project funded by Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann.
Thursday 30th For this month’s The Bigger Picture, we screen Bob Rafelson’s study of alienation Five Easy Pieces, starring Jack Nicholson as blue-collar worker Bobby Duprea, and chosen and introduced by music and arts journalist and broadcaster Zara Hedderman.
