The nominations for this year’s Oscars were announced earlier today. Scorsese’s Hugo led the pack with 11 nominations, while The Artist followed closely behind with 10. Alexander Payne’s The Descendants (which opens at the IFI on January 27th) clocked up 5 nominations. War Horse (showing at the IFI until February 2nd) received 6 nominations including Best Picture.
Hotly-tipped The Artist received nods in all the main categories including Best Film, Director, Actor and Supporting actress. There are only a handful of days to still catch this favourite before it closes on Thursday at the IFI.
Hugo surprised many by being the leader of the pack, with nominations in multiple categories including Best Film and Director. Other surprises included the absence of Michael Fassbender for his role in Shame who lost out to Demian Bechir and Gary Oldman while two other outsiders, Nick Nolte and Max von Sydow, got nods in the Supporting Actor category. Rooney Mara was also expected to just miss out for her role in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but she managed to be included, possibly at the expense of Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk about Kevin.
Irish shorts Pentecost and The Shore were nominated in the live action short category.
