March 5th, 2024: The line-up for the IFI Careers in Screen Day 2024 has been announced. This year’s event will take place in-person at the IFI on Wednesday, March 6th, and registration for students ages 15-18 is available at www.ifi.ie/film/careers-in-screen-2024. The event is kindly supported by Screen Ireland; tickets cost just €5 for the full day and are on sale now.
Now in its seventh year, IFI Careers in Screen Day offers a unique opportunity for young people aged 15-18 with an interest in a future in Ireland’s screen industries to hear from a curated selection of screen industry specialists working across the sector. Careers in Screen guests will provide talks and panels on their work in front of and behind the camera, hands-on workshops, and discussion of their own career journeys.
Speaking about this year’s event, IFI Head of Education Alicia McGivern commented, ‘In the week leading up to the Academy Awards, this year well represented by Irish talent, we hope to spark more interest in Irish film among young people through our varied programme. Over the day, participants can hear from a range of professionals, talking about their jobs, and the ways they have got into the thriving industry.’
The day will begin at 9.30am with a Flora and Son panel discussion, with director and writer John Carney, producer Rebecca O’Flanagan, actors Oren Kinlan and Don Wycherly, costume designer Triona Lillis, hair designer Lyndsey Herron, and makeup designer Barbara Conway, facilitated by Dr. Díóg O’Connell (IADT).
More talks confirmed for this year’s events include VFX with Dhruba Banerjee from EGG Productions; Set Decoration with Jil Turner (Cocaine Bear, The Secret Scripture, Fate: The Winx Saga); Cinematography with Stephen Murphy (Line of Duty, Atlanta, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and 1st Assistant Camera with David Doherty (The Green Knight, Fate: The Winx Saga, Horizon Line).
Other events this year will also include the GalPal Collective, who will discuss avenues into film and creativity; the IFI Irish Film Archive and Library, looking at film archiving as an alternative pathway into the industry; and a showcase of Fresh Film Festival 2023 winning short films.
Workshops taking place at this year’s IFI Careers in Screen include an Introduction to Camera workshop run by Anthony Moriarty (Bow Street Academy), and an Introduction to Acting for Screen workshop with Gemma Doorly (Gaiety School of Acting). Places are limited for both workshops.
The National Talent Academy will host a ‘What’s My Job?’ panel with a variety of screen industry specialists discussing the day-to-day of their roles.
Careers in Screen 2024 will also have a dedicated Careers in Animation event on Wednesday, April 10th, in association with the National Talent Academy for Animation.
