JOE COMERFORD RETROSPECTIVE AVAILABLE TO STREAM NATIONWIDE ON IFI@HOME

July 18th 2023: The Irish Film Institute (IFI) is delighted to present a retrospective of Irish filmmaker Joe Comerford’s films online on IFI@Home (www.ifihome), now available to rent for just €4.99 each, with a full season pass available.

Joe Comerford has worked as an independent director in Ireland for over 50 years, and this online presentation features Down the Corner, Traveller, High Boot Benny, Reefer and the Model and a series of short films. Work that is distinguished by its cinematic subversion and social commentary, Comerford’s films were shown in-cinema at the IFI throughout May 2023, and the IFI is delighted to present them online, available to stream nationwide.

Speaking about bringing these films to IFI@Home, Head of IFI Irish Film Programming Sunniva O’Flynn said, ‘The recent presentation of Joe Comerford’s complete oeuvre in IFI cinemas in May was keenly welcomed by those who had seen the films upon their release over many decades,  and by first time viewers, for whom the season was revelatory. Viewers were enthralled by work that is formally innovative, grounded at times in social realist traditions, and by feature films that are thoughtful reflections of Irish society – both North and South. The launch on IFI@Home will now finally allow audiences to engage with work that for too long was inaccessible.‘

This presentation of Reefer and the Model is particularly exciting; the screening of the film at the IFI in May marked the first film to be exhibited after restoration through the IFI and Screen Ireland Restoration Project. Having recently screened at the Galway Film Fleadh, this is a rare opportunity to see a seminal work from the ’80s from the comfort of home, on IFI@Home.
