THIS OTHER EDEN AVAILABLE TO VIEW ON THE IFI ARCHIVE PLAYER IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

March 8th 2023: To mark International Women’s Day, the Irish Film Institute (IFI) will present the 1959 film This Other Eden on the IFI Archive player for a limited release. The digital remastering of this important work of cinematic history- the first Irish feature to be directed by a woman – was undertaken by the IFI Irish Film Archive. This restoration was able to take place due to a collaboration with the BFI under an initiative of the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) with the support of the EU Creative Europe MEDIA programme. The film will be available to view from 9:00am on Wednesday, March 8th until 9:00am on Friday, March 10th. All films available on the IFI Archive player are available world-wide and can be viewed free of charge.

Muriel Box’s This Other Eden, shot in black and white, explores many different aspects of Irish life and society post-independence. Set in 1945, this sharp comedy follows an independent minded young woman returning to her rural hometown to find that many problems are underfoot. The film deals with weighty issues of the time and locale; relations between the Irish and British, concerns surrounding illegitimacy and the after effects of the War of Independence. The cast is led by some of the legends of Irish theatre at the time of its filming; Leslie Philips, Audrey Dalton, Milo O’Shea and Hilton Edwards, who all contribute excellent performances to this insightful film that encapsulates a specific time in Irish history while also painting a picture of the modern Ireland that was emerging.

To further celebrate International Women’s Day the IFI will also host an in-cinema event by the GALPAL Collective, Directed by Her at 18:00.
