THE COLIN HILL COLLECTION: FREE-TO-VIEW WORLDWIDE ON THE IFI ARCHIVE PLAYER, FROM WORLD DAY OF AUDIOVISUAL HERITAGE 2023

October 27th 2023: The Irish Film Institute (IFI) is delighted to present The Colin Hill Collection, free-to-view worldwide on the IFI Archive Player at www.ifiarchiveplayer.ie/colin-hill on this World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.

This new collection presents two films from the 1970s from filmmaker Colin Hill. Born in Geneva of Cork parents, Hill grew up in the USS but spent his childhood summers with his grandparents in Castletownroche. While working as a Trainee Assistant Film Editor in the BBC, Colin honed his filmmaking craft through the production of two short films, presented in this collection: Dark Moon Hollow (1971) and Duhallow Home (1973).

Commenting on presenting these films for global viewing on the IFI Archive Player, Head of IFI Irish Film Programming Sunniva O’Flynn said, ‘These early films of Colin Hill show a young filmmaker exploring his Anglo-Irish heritage and the architectural and natural beauty of Cork through drama and documentary style film. They are an invaluable recent addition to the IFI Irish Film Archive collection.’

Both shorts were made on a shoestring budget and, Colin notes, “they both show evidence of budgetary constraints: main character’s think voice, natural lighting, non-synchronous clockwork Bolex camerawork, all wild sound post-synchronized audio, script, camera, audio, editing by myself and, except for the narrators, singer and musicians, non-professional, ordinary people as the actors”. Colin continued his career as film editor in the BBC and later at ABC News where he received EMMY achievement awards and a Cine Golden Eagle for his work on documentaries for ABC.

Dark Moon Hollow, 18 minutes in length and made in 1971, is a documentary-style film about an old man’s journey from his home in Roche’s Point to Gougane Barra. Duhallow Home, made in 1973 and 30 minutes in duration, is an unsettling short drama about a young woman returning from London to Co. Cork. Hill explains, “This project aimed to explore the West Briton experience through the eyes of a young woman.”
