Argentine master Lucrecia Martel returns from an eight year absence to deliver what is perhaps her most distinctive work to date. Ostensibly a colonial period drama set in the 18th century, Zama is revealed to be an intoxicating and unsettling study of thwarted ambition that exhibits a fetid, pestilential air redolent of Herzog’s Aguirre: The Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo.
