WATERLAND + GUESTS Director: stephen gyllenhaal 95 minutes, U.K., 1992, Colour, 35mm Book cinema tickets Waterland was the first film publicly screened at the IFI in its new home on Eustace Street in 1992 and we’re delighted to be able to recreate the moment by showing it as the first film in this celebratory season. Teacher Tom Crick (Jeremy Irons) is going through a period of extreme emotional turmoil as is his wife Mary (Sinéad Cusack). To relieve stress, he recounts the tale of his life to his class, and one difficult student (Ethan Hawke) in particular. Told in a style that often touches on the surreal, it was a memorable debut for the IFI (and the director’s daughter, Maggie). (Notes by Kevin Coyne.) We are delighted to welcome Jeremy Irons and Sinéad Cusack to the IFI for this screening. Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to contact the copyright holders of this film to inform them of this screening. If you have any helpful information, please email us. This film is screening as part of 20/20: Landmark Films at the IFI and 1992 Day, which is part of IFI20: Celebrating 20 Years in Temple Bar.
