Whale’s adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel saw Claude Rains in his first American role as the mysterious stranger swathed in bandages taking refuge in a quiet English inn.

Soon, the local villagers discover that the stranger is Doctor Jack Griffin, a chemist who has discovered the secret of invisibility, but at the price of his sanity, his disturbed mindset soothed only by the presence of his fiancée (Gloria Stuart). Determined to use his ability to amass power, Griffin goes on a terrifying killing spree, pursued by authorities. Featuring groundbreaking visual effects, the film retains its power to thrill and fascinate.
