STRANGERLAND

Director: KIM FARRANT

112 minutes, Australia, 2015, Digital

This film was released 5th February 2016, and is no longer screening.

Relocating to the Australian outback with their teenage daughter Lily and younger son Tom, Mathew Parker (Joseph Fiennes) and his wife Catherine (Nicole Kidman) are starting afresh in the wake of a recent unspecified trauma, the source of which appears to have something to do with the precocious Lily whose burgeoning sexuality is a source of aggravation to her tightly wound father. Following an intense family row one night, both Lily and Tom secretly disappear into the bush under cover of darkness. Failing to return the next morning, they are declared missing by the suspicious local sheriff (Hugo Weaving), who fears they will not survive long in the hostile desert environs.

Nicole Kidman excels in director Kim Farrant’s assured debut feature, giving one of her very best performances as a devastated mother whose escalating sense of panic is palpably conveyed.
