The World Cup in 1994 provided a much needed boost to the IFI Café Bar during its early years. Big signs were erected encouraging people to watch the games on ‘the big screen’. In fact the cinema programme continued as normal and the screens weren’t as big as some people expected but after Ireland beat Italy 1-0 at the Giant’s Stadium, big crowds came all the same. Houghton’s winning goal in the 11th minute helped put the IFI on the map.
