Isabelle Huppert is Patience Portefeux, a French-Arabic translator, specialising in wire-taps for the drug squad. Her mother, who lives in a nursing home, is nursed by Khadija, the mother of Afid, who we learn is involved in a major dope deal… only the dope has disappeared. And so, Khadija and Patience decide to team up. Using information Patience aquires through her translation job, she assumes the identity of a drugs wholesaler known as Mama Weed. Based on the book La Daronne by Hannelore Cayre, this zany comedy blends fast-moving action in a contemporary portrait of Paris’s many melting-pot communities. As the film poster suggests ‘Isabelle Huppert is 50% cop, 50% drug dealer, 100% pure’.
Screening as part of the IFI French Film Festival 2020, November 11th-22nd. Full schedule here.
