Rich in bawdy humour, Waking Ned – released as Waking Ned Devine in America – has two elderly schemers plot to claim lottery winnings for themselves and their village. The opportunity comes when pensioner Ned Devine passes away moments after winning the jackpot; Jackie (Ian Bannen) and Michael (David Kelly) realise that they will be able to impersonate this isolated man from an isolated village, thus claiming the seven million pounds for themselves. It’s not long before the whole village is involved and all come together to stage an elaborate hoax to get the money. Life in the village and these unusual antics are depicted with great good humour by director Kirk Jones in this delightful, light-hearted farce.
