If summer has you dreaming of tropical islands, our August IFI Family film will appeal. The first co-production for acclaimed Studio Ghibli is this beautiful, almost dreamlike and silent animation set on a remote island where a single man is washed up. Building a raft to get away, his escape is blocked each time by a massive red turtle. Magnificent sunsets occupy his vision; all we learn about his past is revealed through dreams. Completely visual, this island is a place for audience imagination to run free. Notes by Alicia McGivern
