Comedy, horror, and romance collide in this genre mash-up about an alien invasion hitting a bucolic Western Irish island. An urban teetotaller assigned to work on ‘Erin Island’, Garda Lisa Nolan (Ruth Bradley) finds herself unimpressed by local drunkard and policeman Ciarán O’Shea (Richard Coyle). The twin appearance of mutilated bodies and a bizarre monster captured by alcoholic fisherman Paddy Barrett (Lalor Roddy) forces the two officers together to defend their community. Exploiting the alien’s aversion to alcohol, the pair prepare a defence that plays to strengths of the islanders and organise a massive party that sees everyone getting inebriated. With the script demanding the cast spend almost half the film drunk, Grabbers is a comedy-horror, using irony to send up its various stereotyped characters, protecting it from the charge of being hackneyed whilst playing out a bloody and entertaining farce.
