Stressed to breaking point by his upcoming wedding, determinedly anti-macho groom Fionnan (Hugh O’Conor) is taken on an unexpected and unwanted stag weekend by best man Davin (Andrew Scott). Harbouring secret feelings for Fionnan’s fiancée Ruth (Amy Huberman), Davin needs a break of his own, but plans for a quiet hike with close friends are shattered by the appearance of Ruth’s hyper-virile brother 'The Machine' (Peter McDonald).Unimpressed by a stag weekend without shots or topless dancers 'The Machine' takes the hike off the beaten track, encouraging the mild-mannered urbanites to connect with their wild side and face their problems and insecurities. With sharp comedy and fresh characters reflective of contemporary Ireland, The Stag plays with timely questions of depression, recession, and homophobia, offering wry observations about modern problems in the midst of a warm-hearted romp that favours good times over gloom.
