A brutal assault on photographer Paul (Darren Healy) begins a descent into madness in this uncompromisingly graphic character study from director Brendan Muldowney. Left maimed in the streets by two unidentified muggers, Paul finds it impossible to return to his old life. Abandoning girlfriend Michelle (Nora-Jane Noone) Paul instead finds solace in an uncompromising regime of physical training and steroid abuse, and increasing aggression towards those he encounters. Muldowney skilfully manages Savage’s tough subject matter, avoiding a lapse into exploitation and instead, in his first feature, organises an unsettling and uncomfortable vision of all-consuming violence.
