Set during Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Ireland in 1979 The Last Bus Home tells the story of a bunch of Dublin youths brought together through their shared rejection of the religious celebrations. Punk and aspiring entrepreneur Reena (Annie Ryan) meets Jessop (Brían F. O’Byrne) as they both pointedly avoid all things papal; their shared dissent prompts the formation of punk band ‘The Dead Patriots’ and they set out to conquer Dublin’s underground music scene. The band faces a series of external and internal conflicts culminating in the challenging revelation of one member’s homosexuality. As in other successful Irish musical films The Last Bus Home has its actors perform their music, lending a sense of authenticity to this debut feature from Johnny Gogan.
