John Carney followed up the esteemed Once with this off-the-wall comedy about an alcoholic rehab escapee (Simon Delaney) who, dressed in a red spandex suit, is mistaken for an alien by the naïve residents of a rural Irish town. Barely believing his luck he adopts the personality of Zonad and soon finds himself proclaimed ‘King of the Town’, with barmen giving him free beer, the police covering up his misdeeds, and the town’s young women utterly smitten by him. Only the arrival of Zonad’s old partner Francis (David Pearse), who styles himself as ‘Bonad’, threatens to spoil his impossibly perfect con. The premise is absurd but Carney’s wholehearted commitment to the film’s madness imbues it with a vibrant comic energy. Awards: Best Original Score Award at the 7th Irish Film and Television Awards 2010.
