Political violence in Northern Ireland provides the setting for this provocative short film from Orla Walsh which tackles women’s experiences of both state and republican violence. Sheila (Magael Mclaughlin) travels to the notorious Maze Prison to meet her imprisoned husband Sean (Ger Carey), thinking about both Ger’s arrest and her current pregnancy as she does so. Made in a similar vein to Pat Murphy’s Maeve or Margo Harkin’s Hush-a-Bye Baby, The Visit is another example of the vital energy that coursed through the Northern Irish women’s movement.
