HIGH HOPES (IFI EVENING COURSE: IN THEORY)

Director: Mike Leigh

112 mins, U.K., 1988, Comedy/Drama

THE FILMMAKER

Mike Leigh’s early feature took a scathing look at Thatcher’s Britain with its growing divide between the new middle class and the increasingly disillusioned left. With sharp-edged humour and a degree of poignancy Leigh presents a bundle of intransigent oddballs whose incompatible lives and worldviews collide.

Filmmaker, writer and teacher Donal Foreman will discuss Leigh’s unique collaborative approach and how he uses it in High Hopes to dramatise the everyday, behavioural implications of his characters’ political convictions.

This event is taking place as part of the IFI Evening Course: In Theory (Tuesdays, Oct 6th – Nov 10th). Full course price: €70 (€65 concessions), including tea/coffee. Please book your place by calling Sharon Corrigan on 01 679 5744 or emailing scorrigan@irishfilm.ie (individual tickets for films on this Course are not available.)
