GRANDMA

Director: PAUL WEITZ

135 mins, U.K., 2015, Digital

This film was released on Friday 11th December 2015 and is no longer screening.

In her first leading role since co-starring with Bette Midler in the farcical Big Business (1988), Oscar-nominated Lily Tomlin takes on an altogether different part here in this affecting comedy-drama from Paul Weitz (American Pie, About a Boy).

Tomlin plays Elle, a revered but flat broke poet, grieving the death of her long-term partner Violet, and who we first meet as she’s callously ending a four-month relationship with girlfriend Olivia (Judy Greer). Moping around the house afterwards, Elle is interrupted by 18-year-old granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner), who reveals she’s pregnant and in need of $630 to get the abortion she’s scheduled for that afternoon. With no money to help, the pair venture out to try and get the cash together in time to make the appointment. An offbeat and timely road movie with a great deal to admire, Grandma boasts superb performances, particularly from Tomlin as volatile, forthright Elle. (Notes Alice Butler)
