Félicité (singer-turned-actress Véro Tshanda Beya Mputu) is a proudly independent music club performer in the DR Congo city of Kinshasa in Franco-Senegalese director Alain Gomis’s vibrant fourth feature. When her fourteen-year-old son is severely injured in a motorcycle accident, Félicité is forced to seek the help of a persistent suitor to secure funding for medical care. With the emphasis placed on character and tone, Gomis’s immersive drama is a sensual urban tapestry that resonates with the indigenous music and song of Kinshasa.

(Notes by David O’Mahony)

Director’s Note: This portrait of a struggling single mother in Kinshasa is haunting, captivating, sensually complex and vibrant.
